No Idea, Apia Maroons dominate Manusina 7s wider training squad

The Samoa Rugby Union have named a Manusina 7s wider training squad of 20 players ahead of the Oceania Sevens in November.

All the players featured on the Bluesky National Sevens Series over the last three weekends, with six players being selected from the undefeated champions No Idea.

Runners-up Apia Maroons contribute five players, including playmaker Saelua Seleti, who missed out on the Pacific Games campaign through injury.

Six players from the Pacific Games squad are in the training group, along with plenty of new faces who will be looking to represent the Manusina 7s for the first time.

A big improvement will be needed from that tournament in July where Samoa finished without a medal behind Australia, Fiji and Papua New Guinea.

The Oceania Sevens is an Olympic qualifier, with just one spot available for Tokyo 2020 available to the winner (outside of New Zealand and Australia who have already qualified).

There may well be some overseas players injected into the Manusina 7s mix, although the campaign will overlap somewhat with the Manusina 15s Oceania Rugby Women’s Championship, where a spot in the 2021 Rugby World Cup is on the line.

The wider squad are meeting this Friday before coming together for training.
