LONDON (AP) — Jonny Bairstow's half-century held up Australia before England was bowled out for 258 after tea on day two of the rain-hit second Ashes test at Lord's on Thursday.

With England stuttering at 138-6 after being put into bat, Bairstow put on 72 for the seventh wicket with Chris Woakes before overseeing more valuable runs from the tail that nudged the team to a respectable total.

Bairstow was eventually dismissed for 52, giving spinner Nathan Lyon a third wicket of the innings to match pacemen Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins.

Opener Rory Burns was England's top scorer with 53.

There was about an hour left of play on day two.

The opening day of the test was washed out without a ball being bowled at the home of cricket.

Australia won the first test of the five-match series by 251 runs at Edgbaston.
