Moderated by Kristina Wheeler, transplant administrator at OneLegacy, the panel was the highlight of OneLegacy’s 2019 Transplant Centers: Making a Difference event, an annual celebration that honors the labor of 11 transplant centers in Southern California as they save lives through organ, eye and tissue donation and transplantation. The event also included an awards ceremony and the attendance of speakers Tom Mone, CEO of OneLegacy, and Reg Green, whose son’s organ donation story and book (“The Nicholas Effect”) inspired a Hollywood film that highlighted his family’s journey.

Thanks to Donate Life Hollywood’s partnership with NBC and the producers of the show, OneLegacy has been able to provide recommendations and live comments on social media prior to and during the airing of “New Amsterdam’s” two first-season episodes, which included storylines about organ donation and transplantation.

“We value the inspiring work of ‘New Amsterdam’s’ producers and writers, who bring an authentic portrayal of medical issues in a way that helps save lives,” said Tom Mone, CEO of OneLegacy. “We look forward to expanding our reach to producers and writers across the country to help bring the message of donation to the forefront and ensure powerful storylines of donation in future shows and films. We also appreciate the support of the donation and transplantation community, which enables Donate Life Hollywood to bring together the medical and entertainment worlds to save lives.”

Over 100 transplant and medical professionals who attended the Transplant Centers: Making a Difference event participated in this panel. Additionally, the panel included live video streams on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube with an online reach to over 5,000 people who watched the panel, sent questions, and reacted to the writers’ and producers’ answers.

With “New Amsterdam’s” second season starting next month on Sept. 24, the show’s writers and producers graciously took time off from their busy schedules to share their thoughts and answer questions about the importance of authentic storylines in medical dramas like “New Amsterdam.” Several of the show’s writers have personal connections to medical issues, which have translated into storylines, like the liver transplant chain story on the “The Domino Effect” episode, written by Y. Shireen Razack.

“This episode was inspired by my mom’s story,” said Razack. “My mom was a liver transplant recipient, which allowed her to live 10 more years with us. In those 10 years she got to see all of us graduate from college, she saw two of us get married, saw my other brother get engaged, and I’m very grateful for that.”

The Transplant Centers: Making a Difference event included the attendance of the following transplant centers: Cedars Sinai Medical Center, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, City of Hope, Harbor UCLA Medical Center, Keck Hospital of USC, Loma Linda University Medical Center, Riverside Community Hospital, Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, St. Joseph Hospital, St. Vincent’s Medical Center and UC Irvine Medical Center.
