Four years on the sidelines made victory all the sweeter for Leulumoega Fou College at yesterday's Zone D athletics competition at Apia Park.

Since 2015 the school had sat out from Zone D athletics, because a large proportion of its most talented athletes were also members of the school's Under 17 Rugby Sevens team, which goes on tour annually in Wallis and Futuna.

But after urging from the student body, the school decided to re-enter this year.

That decision paid off on Thursday; they dominated the field at the Zone D event, leaving them well placed for the upcoming Champion of Champions event.

The school took out first place for five divisions: including the girls' junior, intermediate and senior divisions and the boys' junior and intermediate categories.

Saint Paul VI’s College won the boys' senior category.

The Principal of Leulumoega Fou, Fuaolo Apevai Mataafa, acknowledged the efforts of the school's athletes in their return to the track.

“The athletes themselves are happy of what they have achieve today,” the Principal said.

Apia Park was filled with excitement as athletes from seven colleges took on the heat of the sun on the track and field events.

Seven colleges competed: Leulumoega Fou, Aana2, Lefaga, Nu’uausala, Safata, Sagaga, Saint Paul VI’s College.

“ Its all about the Zone D bring all the schools together” said the President of the Zone D, Pousese Fuatimu.

He added the preparation for this year's meet was different because of the Pacific Games hosted last month. (Many of the students of the colleges were part of the games).

“All schools face the same issue of having less time of training and preparation,” he said.

Mrs. Fauolo said  she proud of the five divisions who emerged victorious despite ruing the results in the senior boys division.

She singled out the efforts of the intermediate boys division athletes, many of whom will be headed to Wallis and Futuna on Monday.

“Four weeks training has paid off,” she added.

One of the students of the winning college  Ionafano Leanmoana 17 said he was proud.

“I am proud of my college for  the effort and happy that we returned to our talents in athletics," he said.
