Mother of six dies in domestic violence attack

Police Service have confirmed that a 53-year-old mother from Lalomanu has died at the hands of her husband in an case of domestic violence.

Deputy Police Commissioner, Papali'i Monalisa Tiai-Keti said the victim passed away at the Moto'otua Hospital on Monday this week. 

"[The] S.P.S. confirms the death of a 53 year old female of Lalomanu at the Motootua Hospital on Monday 29 July 2019," she said, in response to questions from the Samoa Observer.  

"[The] injuries were a result of a domestic violence incident."

The defendant is remanded in custody to await court mention, Papali'i confirmed.

"His case will be mentioned on the 12 August 2019."

The latest incident comes almost a year after alarming statistics of domestic violence in Samoa was released through a national two-year inquiry by the Ombudsman Office, revealing family violence continues at an alarming rate and is severely under reported.
