Serve your family with love
We all have different talents and callings from God but no matter what they are, we all need to work hard and never fail to keep trying to be better at what we do.
That is the opinion of Siaosi Matapusi, 26 years old from the village of Faleula-Uta.
As a youth, Siaosi believes that a lot of people are not using their talents, strength and time wisely.
“We are all unique in our own ways,” he tells the Village Voice.
“We all have different purposes in life but all we need to do is to find out what our purposes are and work hard.”
Siaosi’s takes care of his parents and family.
Every day, he wakes up in the morning, prepares food for the family and works on his plantation.
“Youths are very important in our societies. We are the strength of the villages and we are the future of the villages.
“Therefore, I believe that it is vital for us to use our strength and energy wisely.
“In Samoa, if you don’t have a job, your duty as a youth is to look after your family and work on the plantation.
“We are lucky that we have land that we can work on to provide for our families. We also have the sea where we can get food for our family. My parents are still alive and it is my responsibility to take care of them.”
As the breadwinner of the family, Siaosi said he also collects and sell coconuts to earn some extra cash for his family.
“Aside from that, I always have chores every day. This is Samoa, we do a lot of feau (chores).
“I used to work before, but I stayed home after a while and I am unemployed at the moment.
“But for me, I prefer staying at home and taking care of my parents and working on other things to earn money for my family.
“Working on the plantation is hard; but nothing is easy in this life. You have got to have the right mindset to do the job. I love being my own boss and I can make money every day from selling coconuts.
“And I love what I do. It’s very fulfilling to see the smiles on my parent’s faces whenever I serve them food.
“I believe that the way to authority is through service. So I am serving and taking care of my families and hopefully when I have kids as well, they will look after me like this.
“This is where we get our blessings from and for me; I want to continue doing this for my parents and my family.
“This is my purpose and my calling from God and I know that he wants us to make good use of our time, energy and strength.”
