A young Samoan woman has won a scholarship to attend a gender equality training workshop in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Siusiuosalafai Papali’i, 24, was awarded a full scholarship to be part of the Gender Equality Future Advocates Training from July 16-21. It was organized by the Royal Commonwealth Society (R.C.S.) and the Commonwealth Youth Gender Equality Network (C.Y.G.E.N.). The two entities are committed to upholding and promoting Commonwealth values.

For Siusiuosalafai, who is a strong young women’s advocate, her participation provides her a platform to share her knowledge and experience with other participants from other Commonwealth countries. She is a registered Savaii member of the Y.W.C.A. Samoa and is also a qualified peer educator and trainer of the Rise Up! Leadership programme in Samoa. Hailing from from the village of Sapapalii in Savai’i, she is a graduate of the National University of Samoa and teaches at the L.D.S. Vaiola College in Savaii.

Y.W.C.A. Samoa General Secretary, Taimalelagi Mona Tugaga, said she deserved the award courtesy of Y.W.C.A. Samoa.

“She has inspired her fellow sisters in the big island of Savaii community and will gladly share her experience with us upon her arrival. She is an energetic and a fun young lady and she wishes to dedicate this moment to her sisters in the big island, especially to her late father who reminded her that good education, family and traveling are all you need in life.”

Y.W.C.A. Samoa is currently conducting its Rise Up! Trainings for both Upolu and Savai’i where young women are taught to be agents of change in issues pertaining to them like human rights and women’s rights, sexual reproductive and health rights, economic empowerment, cyber bullying, climate change, violence against women and gender equality. These trainings have reached more than 100 young women this year.
