The Cabinet Development Committee (C.D.C.) fully supports an initiative by the Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa (S.R.O.S.) for an environmentally friendly plastic bag research.

S.R.O.S. is looking at the possibility of utilising a produce bi-based plymers – an initiative to support the government-initiated ban on the use of single-used plastic bags.

Chief Executive Officer of S.R.O.S., Dr. Seuseu Joseph Tauati said: “The project’s target includes the reduction of plastic waste reliance in the country, which would prevent imported plastics entering the environment and destroying our natural assets.

A press statement said Seuseu also “cited the need to promote waste management pathways by producing an alternative form of biodegradable plastic using agricultural waste”.

Seuseu said Samoa will benefit from the project.

“Firstly, bio-polymer is more environmentally friendly compared to the single-used plastic bag.

“Secondly, the polymers plastic brand can be produced from organic wastes, which are available locally from various sources such as banana and cocoa crops as well as invasive creeping plants threatening agriculture production.”

Prime Minister Tuilaepa Dr. Sa’ilele Malielegaoi has also instructed the Ministries of Finance and Foreign Affairs and Trade to facilitate the request by securing funding for the project.

“The proposed project is a great reflection of Samoa’s ingenuity in researching ways and options, which are environmentally sound for our country and contributes to the security and well-being of our people,” said Tuilaepa.
