Competition heats up at Super 9
As the P.P.S. Super 9 Senior A season approaches the halfway mark, four teams are staking early claims for places in the semifinals.
Coming into round five this weekend, The A’ana Chiefs, Vaimauga Eels, Savai’i Vikings and Safata Navigators make up the top four with three wins each.
The Vikings are undefeated ahead of their game against the league-leading Chiefs at Fasito’o Tai Primary School Field in A’ana at 1 pm tomorrow.
Vikings Assistant Coach Mase Mahonri Schwalger said the season has been exciting this year.
“There’s a lot of good teams now.
“And that’s what Samoan rugby needs, we need to have all these good teams.”
He said in the past only a couple of the franchises have been able to stand out.
In the first two seasons of Super 9, the Eels won the final over the Chiefs both times.
In fact, such was Vaimauga’s dominance over the competition that they were undefeated through more than two whole seasons, with their first ever loss coming against the Vikings in round two.
They play the Tuamasaga Eagles in the main game at A.C.P. Marist Stadium in Lotopa at 1 pm.
After their last place finish in 2018, the Faleata Knights have been a surprise package this year with two wins from three games.
Their game against the Safata Navigators at the Samoa Rugby Union Fields in Tuanaimato at 11 am gives them the chance to leapfrog the Navigators into fourth place with a win.
The round’s final game is a bottom-of-the-table clash between the Savai’i Warriors and Southern Tornadoes at Palauli College Field in Palauli at 10:30 am.
