Schools took part in an educational awareness programme on forestry and tree planting on Wednesday.

The programme was held at the National Reserve/Forestry Office at Vailima organized by the Forestry division within the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE).

Vaimoso Primary School, Saint Mary’s College (SMC) and Faleata College took part in the programme.

The Principal Policy and Planning officer within the Forestry division, Susau Siolo, highlighted the objectives of the programme.

“We are trying to focus on targeting all schools in primary and colleges both Upolu and Savaii – we target students because they are the future of our country and they will reap the benefits from our long term plan of planting trees.

“At the moment our target for students is to plant 2000. The objectives for the programme is to contribute to the 2 million tree planting campaign, increase in the knowledge and understanding of the children in reference to forestry like its issues, and also for every student to name at least five tree species after the activities.

“The students will have the chance to take a tour around the reserve and identify various tree species - these projects help with printing materials for the students like posters, hats, and water bottles,” she added.

A Geography teacher from SMC, Annie Mauga-Afoa praised the programme for its significance in boosting the knowledge of students in terms of forestry.

“The purpose of the students taking part in this initiative is because of the connection between what they are studying in school and what they will learn from this experience - it is related to the school curriculum that the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture are trying to meet in terms of Geography and Science subjects.

“The students have the chance to learn about conservation areas and it is a good chance for them to see first-hand and experience what they learn in class.

“It is an opportunity for students to learn about the names of the types of trees found in Samoa especially how important their role is and not forgetting the responsible agencies like the forestry division with MNRE,” she added.
