PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Three thousand mourners, including law enforcement officers from the U.S. and Canada, are celebrating the life of a Maine trooper who died while assisting a motorist.

Detective Ben Campbell was fatally injured when a tire dislodged from a logging truck and struck him while he was outside his vehicle last Wednesday alongside Interstate 95.

The 31-year-old Campbell was remembered Tuesday for a friendly smile and service to others. He was headed to a training event when he stopped to help the driver.

His wife, Hilary, tearfully addressed her husband during the service at the Cross Insurance Arena, saying, "I love you with every piece of my being."

She says she'll make sure the couple's 6-month-old son grows up knowing how selfless his dad was.
