The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Labour exists to help Samoa.

As a means to provide an enabling environment for business development, the Ministry’s vision is to help businesses and the business community foster economic growth whereby the benefits are reaped by members of the public.

This was the gist of an Awareness Day programme carried out by the Ministry at Lepa, Aleipata, yesterday.

The gathering was guided by the theme “Strengthening public partnership to foster economic growth for all.”

The day was to promote the services of the Ministry, strengthen partnerships with other agencies, receive feedback from its partners as well as to look at what’s possible in the future.

The Minister of Commerce, Industry and Labour, Lautafi Fio Purcell, said the occasion was extremely important for the Ministry’s plans.

“Your participation is really important,” he said.

“Its shows how supportive you are in working with the government ministry and its public private partnership to promote the standard in developing of businesses for the wealth of our country.”

Present during the event were the Ministry’s other business partners including the Small Business Enterprise Centre (S.B.E.C.), Ministry of Revenue and other relevant government ministries.

So why take it out to the villages?

The Ministry’s Chief Executive Officer, Pulotu Lyndon Chu Ling said they felt it was important to promote their services in the villages so that people know what they are about.

He said the Ministry wants members of the public – including villagers – to understand their work and why they do what they do based on the laws guiding their work.

He said many people don’t understand and appreciate the work they do and this was one way of addressing it.

The Ministry has three core roles mandated under 33 legislations. These roles include providing an enabling environment to facilitate commercial growth, to develop different industries and to oversee labour issues.

The Ministry’s mission is: “To provide an enabling legal environment for the development of the private sector to stimulate investment, industry development to boost productivity, fair trade competition, create full employment of local workforce and highly qualified trades people, generate more work opportunities encompassing temporary movement of natural persons, improve safe work environment, increase innovation and integrity in Samoa.”

The next awareness programme will take place in Asau, Savaii.
