The dreams of a young village girl

Dreams are free. It is after all what makes the world go round.

For Fitiana Moana, a Computer School student from the village of Falelauniu-Tai, she dreams of becoming a doctor.

Fitiana, 17, understands the struggles her family is currently facing and she uses that to motivate her studies in hopes of helping out those she loves.

She mentions that all she wants for her family is for them to be happy.

“Right now my family is just trying to pursuit a happy life,” Fitiana told the Village Voice.

“It is just me, my siblings and my mother living here. My father has a new wife now and is living with her. So my only plan right now is to do my best in helping out my family.”

With only one person in her family currently generating income, Fitiana is anxious to start working and do her part as well.

“Right now my elder sister is the only one who has a job,” she said.

“That’s one of the reasons I am taking my schooling very seriously, I want to be able to help out by getting myself a good job with a decent pay.

“We can’t just live on my sister’s pay alone so I want to help out as soon as possible. When my sister receives her pay then it finishes after just a few days.

“The rest of the week while waiting for her next pay is tough because we have no more money to provide for the family’s needs.”

With quite a few people living in the house along with the occasional faalavelave that eats up a lot of money, Fitiana says her family really struggles with money.

“My sister makes $230 a week and some of it goes straight to the loan we made for a faalavelave we had earlier on,” she said.

“The rest goes to school expenses, the sickly in the family and everything else. For me personally, I don’t see this type of life as a problem; I use the situation to motivate myself in school.

“That’s the only problem we face, the money we have is just not enough.”

Asked for her dream in life, Fitiana says she wants to be a doctor so she can help as many people as possible.

“Right now I am aiming to become a doctor,” she said.

“My dream is to be able to help others and provide for my family and being a doctor will allow me to do just that.

“My siblings are also very sickly and I want to be able to help them as well. It’s not going to be an easy journey but I will still make an effort to get there one day.”
