Your future is in your hands

Development begins with development within our own families, according to Maina Aukuso from the village of Solosolo.

Aged 55 Maina maintains that everyone has a part to play to develop Samoa, especially families.

“Development is born within families,” she said.

“Development starts from home. If you develop your own family well, you will not need to depend on others and especially the country, to do things for us.

“We are responsible for earning a living for our own family and feeding our children.

“If you work hard, you will reap the fruits of your efforts. You will get back whatever you will put into whatever you do. If everyone works hard to use their talents, I know for sure every family will surely develop.

“Moreover,” she added, “we may have that one thing that we struggle with but that doesn’t give us the right to complain about it because it is simply the way it is.

“Everyone’s futures are in their own hands.  Instead of complaining and depending on the government to do the development, we should work extra hard.

“Our government is bringing in a lot of help and efforts from other countries to develop our country,” says Maina

“There have been a lot of improvements and changes to our economy over the years in terms of development.

“So instead of being grateful, people always complain and look at the negative side.”

For Maina’s family, they depend on their hard-working father to provide financially aside from what they produce from their green environment which is perfect for a plantation.

“We are very lucky to have this land and the natural resources surrounding us.”

“While my husband and my son are at work, I make sure to work at our plantation.

“What we earn is enough for our basic needs.

“We also have good access to water and electricity,” she said.

“We used to live with some family members but this life is all about development, and here we are developing our own family.

“Even though we live in a faleo’o, we are one happy family and we have what we dream of.

“But like I said before, everything starts from each individual family. If you develop your family well, you will not need to depend and rely on others to do things for you.”
