Competing in business

What’s your take on the issue of the growing number of businesses run by foreigners in Samoa?

Should anything be done to curb the increasing numbers?

Maluseu Togamau, Vaiusu, 57

The real truth is - the Samoan businesses will never be able to compete with Chinese shop prices, they are really cheap and the best solution is for the government to set up a policy to limit the amount of foreigners in the country.

Lauao Semau, 27, Moamoa

I have nothing much to say about foreigners. On the other hand, they will give our local businesses the knowledge and understanding of how to compete. They (local businesses) need to compete as well. If Chinese shops can do it, why not them? It’s time to stop complaining but hook up with other businesses and do deals…well they understand where I’m coming from. That’s my solution.

Viane Tele’a, Le’auva’a, 26

Those Chinese shops in town and especially in some of our villages in the rural areas are increasing. This is totally unfair to our local business owners. The government should look into something (policy) to minimize the numbers of these foreigners in Samoa.

Mikaele Tanuvasa, Moata’a, 45

It’s too late to deal with foreigners now. The government opens doors to these foreigners, they should also close them for the sake of us as well. The solution is – the government.

Vitolina Tanuvasa, Nofoali’i, 36

What more can we do? I actually feel for the local businesses. I think the government needs to step in and help protect these businesses. My solution is if there’s no way our locals can compete with these foreigners businesses, they should be closed down.

Faith Amiatu, 22, Leulumoega

I think these foreigners offer very low prices, and that’s good news for our people when looking at the high cost of living that our people are now living with every day.
