Now it’s time to do our part

Dear Editor,

Thank you Lesa for a wonderful editorial about the environment.

My family and I gathered broken and useless electronics, with batteries still intact, dumbed into streams, which flow by our home and land of Fogautu in Vaimoso.

Industrial wastes are the biggest threat to Small Island Nations, not to mention oil spills and pollutions from vessels coming into the harbor, car exhaust spewed into the environment, etc., etc.

Environmental dangers that will accompany the kinds of development approved and desired by leaders who are clueless to long term damages.

Leaders who just want to pour big monies into these projects and their pockets, without foresight, is a major problem for Samoa. Our Government, out of ignorance or just pure negligence, does not adhere to honest feasibility and environmental studies on any of their major projects.

The Satitoa Aleipata Wharf, laying wasted as we speak, and the new proposed Vaiusu Wharf has none. A Mickey Mouse study was done for the Asau Wharf, I believe by the foreign company which profited from the logging business they did there.

An airport, the Government proposed to build in Aleipata, have no such studies done. It is therefore safe to say, the government has no concern whatsoever, on long term economic sustainability and viability of anything, not to mention any adverse affects on peoples lives, livelihood, lands and the islands limited resources.

Personal adulation, glorification with instant gratification of money in the pocket, is the present order of the day.

As a side note, some decry President Obama’s declaration, which protected a vast area of our Pacific Ocean. This is the best thing ever for Pacific Islanders towards reclaiming our ocean resources and sustainable food sources. Now, we do our part!
