From P.S.C. to N.U.S. - University appoints new Director of Human Resource Division
The National University of Samoa has a new Director of Human Resource.
She is Makerita Luatimu-Tiotio. The appointment was announced by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Fiu Asofou So’o during a press conference on Friday.
Mrs. Tiotio joins the N.U.S well prepared after working for the Public Service Commission. Speaking to the Sunday Samoan, she said she is humbled by the appointment.
“I want to acknowledge the Vice Chancellor of the University for believing in me and for giving me the opportunity to serve Samoa through the N.U.S,” she said.
“It’s an honour to be here and I know that there were other people who had also applied for this but I thank God for this great opportunity.”
Mrs. Tiotio has just taken up the new role and she said she is still familiarizing herself with the place. “First of all I have to see what is currently in place and then see which of these are working because I am not planning on reinventing everything.
“So I am just looking to see what is already there and what needs to be there for the betterment of the university and the staff members. “[And] whatever area that needs to be improved then we will work on that and the thing is I will not be the only one who will be doing this I need to consult all the faculties of the university and the staff working on these positions to bring in issues in regards to HR. “I am specifically talking about HR and I do not intend to talk about other faculties but my work is with the HR so I will be looking at what is currently in place and what needs to be improved and we will go from there.” Mrs. Tiotio said she strongly believes in teamwork.
“I value team work and the views from everyone else so that we can work towards the betterment of the work because if the employee happy which is my part as an HR then everyone will be happy and the students will have good results,” she said.
“I am only contracted for 3 years and so that is what I will be looking at is the improvement of the workplace here.” Mrs. Tiotio is married with five children.
She is living with her family at Vaivase Uta but hails from the villages of Fausaga Safata, Saleaumua and Lano, Savaii. She is the second child of eight children.
She graduated from the National University of Samoa in 1996 and got a scholarship to study in Fiji.
