The newest Japanese volunteer to Samoa, under Japan’s International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has arrived.

Riari Tabata, arrived recently and is excited to assume her duties as Occupational Therapist with non-government organisation Special Olympics Samoa (SOS).

She will work closely with SOS’ CEO Tusitina Nuuvali and her young hardworking team over the next two years.

With extensive experience in Sports and sports injury-related rehabilitation therapies, Ms. Tabata has also provided treatment for patients with cerebrovascular disease, spinal cord injuries and dementia.

She was a member of a special support group for people affected by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.

Her in-country orientation program in Samoa commenced with introductions to the Ambassador of Japan in Samoa, Tuimaugaoali’i Kazumasa Shibuta and the Aid Coordination Division staff of the Ministry of Finance, for the government of Samoa.

After completing basic Samoan language lessons, she has just returned from her week-long homestay visit with the Pereira family in Lotofaga, Aleipata.

She looks forward to her new life experiences in learning more of Samoa’s history and culture, and hopes to transfer her knowledge to assist with Samoa’s development through Special Olympics Samoa as a provider for our athletes with Special Needs.
