Made in Samoa

Fashionable possibilities on the horizon

There is potential for Samoa to develop and grow products designed and manufactured here.

That’s the opinion of representatives from Sewtec Fashion Academy in Auckland, Andrina Stanisich, aged 61, and Simon Julius, aged 46, who are in Samoa.

The duo have been attending a number of business meetings during their short stop.

Taking a well-deserved break from affairs they agreed to tell the Samoa Observer about their company’s mission to improve the Samoan economy by bringing the production of locally designed clothing, back to the country itself.

“There are a lot of things that are designed here but manufactured in Fiji,” Simon said.

“There’s a big need to bring the production back to Samoa.”

Whilst chiefly in the area to pursue and establish a ‘Made in Samoa’ fashion label, the pair also told of their experiences on the island.

They definitely plan to return as tourists in the near future.

During their brief stay at the Tanoa Tusitala Hotel in the centre of Samoa’s capital, they attended a “cultural evening…  which was very entertaining and the food was great.”

Andrina said the onsite entertainment proved a hit, with a display of both traditional and fire dancing.

“Unfortunately we’ve not been able to see much this visit… but the people are so friendly and the country is so beautiful.”

Samoa is proud of its beautiful town and clean landscape, which Andrina observed.

“I’ve been to Fiji before and Samoa is much cleaner; there’s no rubbish or graffiti” which constitutes a “really clean and pleasant environment.”

Despite a disappointing outcome from the recent French Climate Change Pact, with the withdrawal of the U.S, Samoa still takes their ecological responsibilities very seriously.

Andrina and Simon praised the country’s cleanliness and agreed that it was all part of what makes Samoa a worthwhile destination.

With the possibility of a new ‘Made in Samoa’ fashion label on the horizon, the Auckland associates, are excited to have the opportunity to return and not only explore business ventures, but also the beautiful island itself.
