We help one another in the villages – Luisa Sakaria

“Village life is great,” says 45-year-old Luisa Sakaria from the village of Eva.

“My village in particular is great because it’s where I grew up in. Living out here is way better than living in town.”

And why is that? “In my village you will often see how families help each other out,” explained Luisa. “If one family is suffering or does not have enough for the day then another family will most likely step in and help them. That’s why life here is better.

“In Apia, there are many fights and disputes between people. Here in the village there is more peace because all the people are good.”

Some people nearby say there are issues with inland roads?

“Even when it comes to our road, everything is good,” says Luisa.

“The only road that hasn’t been done is the one going towards the inlands and we have already asked for it to be fixed so that it will make going to our plantation a little easier.”

“One problem we have is that our village doesn’t have a school,” says Luisa.

“All our children attend Salelesi School. We had a school in the past and the village is currently discussing bringing another school here for the kids. But at the moment we will stick to sending our children to Salelesi.”

What about poverty, is there any poverty in Samoa?

“There are many families in Samoa who fall under poverty,” says Luisa.

“But I know that the best solution would be for everyone to work hard. There are many people out in the villages who are unemployed but that shouldn’t be the end of it.

“They can lean on their plantations to live. It’s that simple. There are so many people who are saying there is a lot of poverty in Samoa but I know if everyone was to work hard then you can always make ends meet.

“If you just focus on looking after your family then all your problems will be settled.”
