New book launched
Everything is about love, says Jadyn Patrilita Petimara Ualesi.
This 19-year-old from Tufuiopa, is talking about her ‘Fear to Love’ book which was launched last night at the Orator Hotel.
But she could also be talking about life in general.
Dedicated to her late grandparents, Lauano La'ulusa Kilepoa and Tima Naea, Tusigatupe and Petimara Ualesi Tulafono, Jadyn says the book was written because “this is the only way that I can express my true feelings and it’s where I can really be truthful about myself.”
Her unflinching honesty comes through strongly in the poetry she has shared in the weekly Poetry Page of the Samoa Observer over the past years.
But her love of writing began when she was in primary school at Peace Chapel Christian School when she was asked to write essays.
“I could imagine then what I wanted to be and who I wanted to be.”
It was also reading that inspired her with authors of her favourite books including Sylvia Day, Cassandra Clare and Lani Wendt-Young.
Secondary schooling followed at Fa’atuatua Christian College, during which time the diagnosis of rheumatic fever brought an end to the volleyball and netball that she loved.
It’s perhaps not surprising that she turned even more to the reading and writing she loved.
After a year at the National University of Samoa in 2014, Jadyn moved to New Zealand and went to WelTec to study for a Certificate in Business Administration and Computing Level 3.
Her love of literature continued and her determination to fulfill her dreams of writing and eventually publishing her work, did not diminish.
“I will not give up on my dreams no matter what comes along. My future plans are to keep writing more books and poems when I have the time to do so and I encourage other young people to never give up or lose faith in themselves.”
Her book can truly be called ”a labour of love” touching on the changing nature of relationships and exploring the feelings common to those experiencing early love.
“It’s probably more suitable for young teenagers and adults,” she says.
‘Fear to Love’ can be purchased online, from Jadyn herself or from Samoa Stationery and Books after or during her book signing.
