The Challenge is on!

There is much interest coming from individuals, groups of friends and mums calling up on behalf of their daughters who wish to participate in the Digicel’s Extraordinary Sports Women Challenge.

“It is quite heart-warming and encouraging to hear from mums,  whose daughters are keen to participate in the challenge,” says Nynette Sass, Chairman of the Samoa Women in Sports.

“Some have called from Savai’i and others from the rural areas, asking if their daughters could enter and that they would be quite happy to arrange for accommodation and other logisitical arrangements in town so their daughters can participate.

“This is the nurturing spirit and support that all girls and women need to excel in whatever activities they wish to pursue.”

The challenge involves participating in all five sports of Lawn Bowls; 5km run/walk; shot put; squash and outrigger canoeing. With the exception of some Saturdays, all competitions will be run after hours.

Manamea Schwalger, is a feisty mum who is fighting cancer, has signed up and is not letting her illness hold her back.

“I am no professional athlete, my daughters can beat me in a 5 meter race. On top of that, I still gasp for air after brisk walking a meter or so. SO, although I have no clue as to how shot put and lawn bowling is played, I am going to take up this challenge! Because I CAN!! Hope to see many more familiar (non athletic. Ha ha ha ) frenz who will drag me to the finish line, Bcoz you can! “

The schedule of the event for the next month means there will also be times allocated for participants to try out the sports first before they compete. “It is all about participation, about learning a new sport, engaging with other ladies and girls and building networks and sharing of experiences! This is the spirit of the Digicel Extraordinary Sports Women Challenge” says Sass.

There are two age groups for the competition: Juniors 14-18years of age and the Open division, above 18 years of age.  Registration is only ten tala for Juniors and 20 tala for the Open division.

“Our deadline has been extended to Thursday, 17th March,  on receipt of the final competition schedule from our National Federations. We realised that there was ample time hence the extension to closing of entries. The Briefing is still on Monday, 14th of March at Ocean Club, next door to Paddles Restaurant at 5pm. All challengers are required to be present then, “ says Ulugia Jay Ah Fook Schuster, the Competition Manager.
