Hard work and perseverance are the key factors in life

Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.

Ask Ta’ase Epati, and he will be happy to tell you about this.

Aged 46, Ta’ase is originally from the village of Lefagaoali’i Savaii, but he is now staying with his wife, Ioana Anitele’a and their three children at the village of Levi.

He is a carpenter.

Ta’ase said he didn’t have much time growing up and he is also not the richest person today. However, he told the Village Voice that he works hard each and every day to provide for his family and children.

“Nothing in this life is easy,” he said.

“Whether you work in the office, plantation or whatever, the main key to anything you do in life is to continue to work hard and persevere.

“We all have our good and bad days, sometimes we get to a point where we just want to drop everything and give up. But I’ve learnt over the years that you are responsible for your own well-being and the well-being of your loved ones.

“So if you give up easily, your family will suffer as well. Hard work is very important. Sometimes you also need to make a lot of sacrifices in life in order for you to do your best.

“Sometimes when we come across challenges, the only option we think of is to give up. But if you love what you do and if you put your family first, nothing will ever stop you from doing your best.”

Reflecting back on his childhood days, Ta’ase said a lot has changed over the years.

“When I was young, everything was simple back then. I mean the lifestyle was simple. I used to hold .50 cents back then and felt like I was a millionaire.

“Every time I tell these stories to my children they laugh and think that I am telling them lies. But that’s just proof that things have changed over the years.

“Back in the days, whenever a family owned a car, they were considered the richest family in the village. Even if the car was a second hand car and not a new one.

“But nowadays, almost every family in Samoa owns a car. We have a lot of new developments in Samoa as well, and that’s a good thing because it is helping make everything easier for families in Samoa.”

Moreover, he reiterated that all the work that he does is for the benefit of their family.

“I work as a carpenter and also on the plantation. Like I said before, hard work and persevering are very important in this life.

“I always say to my children that if they want to own a lot of things in this life, they have to work hard and keep improving day by day.

“I also try my best to show them that if you want something, you have to earn it. And that is why I work on my plantation even if I get tired from working.

“My wife also works as well, and she helps out with our expenses. My main dream is to work hard now and sacrifice a lot so I can provide for my children.

“I want them to have a better education so that they can have better futures as well. I know one day our efforts and sacrifices will be worth it.”
