A new era for University

A new “marriage” at the National University of Samoa was celebrated last week.

“I now pronounce you husband and wife,” said the Minister of Health, Tuitama Dr. Talalelei Tuitama.

He was speaking during the ceremony to merge the Faculty of Medicine and the School of Nursing & Health, forming the new Faculty of Health Sciences.

Held at the University Fale, Tuitama said the merging of the two faculties means it is great for Samoa and the university.

“In life people ought to look at ways that will benefit everyone because we cannot succeed if we don’t work together,” he said.

“As for this wedding or this holy matrimony between the Faculty of Science and the School of Nursing & Health Science, the high hope is that may it benefit our families, villages and especially our country.

“In any new couple, their main aim is to be fruitful.

“It’s the same as the ceremony today, these two faculties are merged together to bear great leaders, great doctors and nurses in the future.

“That I believe is the main purpose of the merging of these two.”

He went on to say that he supports the new era created by the Vice Chancellor as well as the staff.

“So I just want to voice my support on this beautiful decision that has been reached by the University of Samoa to merge the two faculties’ medicine and nursing,” he said.

“[And] I congratulate you on this and looking forward to the fruitful outcome of this merge.”

The Minister of Education, Sports and Culture, Loau Keneti Sio, was given the honor to cut the ribbon.

“I have heard of this plan for so long and now it’s finally happening,” he said.

“I hope that you will produce lots of intelligent babies, brilliant babies and beautiful babies. You will have to serve our country through the health and education sectors.

“So congratulations to the Vice Chancellor and everyone here in the University for this great Initiative that I believe will benefit a lot of the young people.”

N.U.S Pro Chancellor Aeau Chris Hazelman said the merger is a result of hard work to improve the delivery of education at the University.

“The Motto of the university “Ia Ao Samoa” has always been the drive and has always been a mission within the Council. May we never lose sight of that motto and may the Light Shine upon Samoa.”
