Toleafoa Toomata, from Fasitoo-Uta, is in need of a water tank.

He shared to the Village Voice team that his family uses rusted water drums to store water, which this could affect their health.

The 34-year-old has no children. He said sometimes when there is absolutely no water; they go to a different family to seek help.

“It is just me and my wife who live here. Every time when there is no rain, there is a family that we go to and fetch water. We usually give them money to help with their water bill.

“We have been living here for more than a year now and this is the daily struggle that we encounter,” he said.

The couple are both unemployed and they rely on their plantation to provide for everything that they need.

“We rely heavily on the land for survival. We usually earn $200 from the land when we sell peas, tomatoes, cucumbers and even our crops.

“And with the money that we earn, we usually budget it wisely since we would need to buy chemicals for our plantation, also for food and certain things like that.”

Mr. Toomata also mentioned that they are still in the process of fixing their house, their tarpaulin and the wood that has been used for the house is starting to decompose.

“Our tarpaulin was torn by the strong winds and so now every time when it rains, we cannot prevent the water from entering the house and this has caused the posts of our house to decompose, we also don’t have money to fix this problem. The kitchen and shower are slowly getting fixed.”

He said they are saving money for their daily feed.

Mr. Toomata adds they have a land, but it would take a while until they could harvest their root crops.
