Savai’i community empowered
Community representatives in Savai’i have shared their experiences about the existing environmental problems.
Not only that, they also brainstormed practical solutions to solve them.
The opportunity for more than fifty participants from the big island was presented during the Operational Phase 6 of the Global Environment Facility (G.E.F) Small Grants Programme (S.G.P) workshop held at the Savai’ian Hotel.
The men and women represented women’s committees, men’s committees, village councils, youth, civil societies and non-governmental organizations.
Speaking on behalf of the U.N.D.P. Resident Representative, Yvette Kerslake, U.N.D.P. Programme Manager of the Environment and Climate Change Programme, said: “The G.E.F S.G.P Operational Phase 6 capacity building workshop for Savai’i aims to orient, inform and build the capacity of communities in advancing the concept notes to full proposals.
“The proposals will address environmental issues and will enable communities to adapt to the impacts of climate change.”
During the workshop participants learnt about the advantages of forming stronger partnership links with government ministries that are relevant to their projects.
They gained better understanding of the capacity and skills in completing the full proposal form to be able to apply for funding for their projects.
Working towards SG’s objective: “Global environmental benefits secured through community-based initiatives and actions”, GEF-SGP has been supporting environmental projects in Samoa for over 12 years and funded 162 small grants projects.
S.G.P aims to empower vulnerable communities to lead their own environmentally sustainable development through sustainable interventions.
The workshop was an excellent opportunity for the most vulnerable communities in Savai’i who have not yet received project funding to benefit from the U.N.D.P. G.E.F-S.G.P.
