Dear Students, Teachers and Parents

Last Monday, I gave you a few hints about some of the competitions the Samoa Observer is involved in this year.

2016 will be the fifth year of staging the Bluesky, M.ES.C. and S.S.A.B. Short Story Competition organised by the Samoa Observer,  so we are planning to make it an extra special competition for you.

We missed last year because we launched a regional adults short story competition, The Samoa Observer Tusitala Short Story Competition which was a fantastic success. Look out for a book later in the year which has a collection of some of the stories that were entered.

But back to our competition for school students, after I have met with our Bluesky, M.ES.C. and S.S.A.B. sponsors, I will be able to tell you more about the details for our fifth competition - expect bigger and better in lots of ways!

The Samoa Observer is also working with the New Zealand High Commission to bring you a competition for Secondary and Foundation Year students who are 16 and over by September 1, 2016 and are Samoan citizens.

As I mentioned, the top prize for that particular competition, is a trip to France but we plan to offer other prizes from our supporting sponsors for Highly Commended stories as well.

In the meantime, you could start doing some research into the Battle of Somme which took place World War 1 from 1914-1918.

Last year, Ariel Fana’afi Ioane was the lucky winner who travelled to New Zealand as her prize in a similar story competition. She told me that she had spent a lot of time doing research which no doubt was part of the reason for her success. She is also an avid reader and prolific writer!

To give you a kickstart for this competition we have included some information and photos today about the Battle of the Somme. Read through and then look out for next week’s Monday edition when there will be more details.
