National Boxing Trials Underway
Today is the start of the road to Oceania 2017.
The best of Samoa’s boxers from Upolu and Savaii are trialling for a spot on Samoa’s National team heading to Oceania.
Speaking with the President of Samoa Amateur Boxing Association, Fesoloa’i Va’aiga Tuigamala,
“Tomorrow is the first step for the road to Oceania.”
“Tavui Lemisio, has done a fantastic job of coordinating all these trials. Its not easy, but its an opportunity and its been fair right through the whole thing.”
Oceania is a vital step on the way to bigger international bouts.
Fesoloa’i explains, “Tomorrow’s trials is the first step for our boys to compete in the international stage.”
“We’re excited, these trials will unearth some real home-grown talent. The opportunity for them to up against Samoans from New Zealand and Australia is something they look forward to because this will give them a measure.”
“The winner and runner up of each category will automatically qualify for the World Championships in Hamburg, Germany in August.”
“That’s going to be one of the biggest highlights for Samoan boxing because it puts themselves against the best in the world.”
“What we’ve got here is our young boys have got pathways that they can see the light at the end of the tunnel. They can see their rewards for their hard work.”
Trials are being held at the Plantation Boxing Gym in Alamagoto, supporters are encouraged to watch their fighter in the ring as they go head to head with some of Samoa’s finest.
Spotlighting is some of Samoa’s home-grown talent such as: John Peneueta, Senoa Hall, Alema Aukuso and more who are absolutely sensational in the ring and definitely ones to look out for.
Following trials, The finale will all culminate to Pound 4 Pound Vailima Corporate Fight Night for S.A.B.A on May 12th. Where the final team to represent Samoa in Oceania will be announced,
The boxing event will be filled with entertainment as taxi stands and other rival business competitors go toe to toe in the ring and will be a night you won’t want to miss.
Also, Samoan boxers from overseas who are keen to represent Samoa on the international stage will fight it out with local boxers to lay claim to a spot on the roster for Oceania.
“Then the finals where they will put themselves against the best from Australia and New Zealand.”
Proceeds will go toward helping fund the team heading to Oceania as well as other major international bouts.
