Rugby League Samoa has kicked off 2019 by officially launching a new tournament last night – Fantastic Four 9’s Series 2019.

Rugby League Samoa  President, Tagaloa Fa’afouina Su’a, welcomed guests including RLS board members as well as sponsors representatives, coaches, captains and tournament referees.

The tournament will be held over four consecutive weeks starting this Saturday except for the week of the Marist International season – which has its Seven’s Tournament on February 16. The Vailima Fantastic Four finale will be held on February 22.

Vailima Breweries has once again taken up the naming rights for the tournament, by providing not only cash valued at $20,000 tala. But also products for the teams’ weekend refreshments every Saturday.

RLS selected four elite teams from the pool of players that participated in the Super 9’s competition last year, who will compete in this tournament – each with naming rights that include Tanoa Samoa, Matniuel, G-Mana and Pacific Ezy – who will compete against teams from Queensland, Auckland, and a team from Tonga.

According to President Tagaloa, all the local and overseas team players competing in this tournament are eligible for selection for Samoa in this year’s Pacific Games as well as for the World 9’s later this year.

“This is why we have to launch this, because this is the first of its kind in the history of rugby league here in our country; so in preparation for not only the July 9’s.

“But also a World 9’s in October which will be held in Sydney so most of the players will be selected from league players overseas but that doesn’t stop the opportunity for any other players who can prove themselves to be on that team,” he said.

SRL wishes to thank all their partners as well as their sponsors for the never-ending support.
