Govt. must help to cushion cost of living
The people of Samoa are struggling with the cost of living.
The worst part is that the government doesn’t seem to know this.
So is the opinion of Fitu Sefo from Nu’u Fou who said leaders need to start paying attention to the plight of people.
The 36-year-old told the Village Voice that he believes poverty exists in Samoa and there’s nothing we can do about it.
“Whatever money I get; I make sure that my family gets everything they need,” he said. “But it’s so hard everyday.” Fitu currently works for a local Wholesale and this is where he earns a living to take care of his family.
“I know that we are all struggling because there’s no easy way in this life anymore. The cost of living will keep on rising even if we can’t afford it.
“I mean; thinking back about the goods and products that were cheap; it’s shocking to learn their new prices are beyond what we earn from our jobs. It’s like things change faster than people and that’s a scary thought.
“The only answer to problems like these is making sure you get a good job that earns you enough money for now and the future.”
He added that people need to work and do the best they can.
“You don’t get anything from just sitting around and hoping for the better. We actually have to stand up and make a difference ourselves.
“And honestly; I do get tired sometimes from working but it is the thought of making a living for my family that motivates me and keeps me going.
“I know it doesn’t feel good to work for money and then next thing you know; it disappeared just like that but once we don’t have money or jobs; we are putting ourselves in a more struggling position than before.
“The cost of living will always be a problem to me and I know it’s a problem to others as well but the only solution we have; is work to get that money for our survival.
“I also know that a lot of people are used to borrowing money and things from others and that’s not a situation that’s new because we all have had times where we don’t have a choice but to do that.
He added: “The cost of living is too much and the government must help in making things easier for their own people.”
