Look back and thank God, Samoa!

The opinion was shared by 68-year-old-mother, Suemalo Su’emalo, from Safotu Savai’i yesterday on Beach Road.

She was among thousands of people who had gathered to celebrate Samoa’s 55th independence day.

“We all know that it’s good to thank God everyday,” she said. “Just give Him thanks because without Him we wouldn’t be here today.”

Su’emalo believes that mothers play multiple roles in families, churches and in the development of the country.

“It’s a must for all the mothers in Samoa to come and march this morning because we are the backbone of this nation,” she said.

“As for us, we are here today under the Fonotele-O-Tinā for the Independence Day and we are very happy to witness this historical event.

“To be here this morning, we are very grateful and excited to be part of the celebration, personally this is the only day that many of us gather together in one place to celebrate the Independence Day for Samoa.”

Suemalo’s excitement was shared by 13-year-old student, Roma Filipo, of Manono Primary School.

“Celebrating Independence Day is a must for everyone. We have to come together and give thanks to God for His unfailing love.

“What’s so nice about today is that this is the only day where we get to see all the different people, from all the different walks of life unite as Samoans.”

Roma said he would never forget his experience of yesterday.

“What I’ve learned in school is that Samoa was formerly known as Western Samoa, and Samoa is the first small-island country in the Pacific to become independent.

“I was born and raised in Manono and I am proud of my culture. To be part of the celebration today is my way of thanking God for everything he had done for Samoa.”

Twenty-one-year old, Thomas Lam Afoa, from Australia is in Samoa with his parents.

“It’s a wonderful time to be in Samoa, I have never seen the way Samoa celebrates independence but from what I have seen, it is absolutely sensational,” he said.

“I just can’t wait to watch the traditional dances, entertainment featuring beautiful songs and graceful dances.”

 Happy 55th Independence Day Samoa!
