Real experience of Climate Change

Preventative measures must be taken to adapt to climate change.

And for Solosolo’s, Nikolao Mika, he says it is necessary that a seawall is constructed to protect them from the disasters associated with climate change.

“I think it is time that the people in our village started looking into making a seawall because climate change is something we cannot run away from,” he told the Village Voice team.

The 30-year-old said the village of Solosolo needs a seawall to prevent rubbish from the sea entering the village because it could also cause sickness.

“The ocean contains different kinds of rubbish. I am just concerned because now dengue fever is coming back again and I know for sure that as the waves come, they will surely leave rubbish everywhere and it will attract flies.”

Mr. Mika added there were other issues arising from climate change that could be prevented.

“It would be very helpful if we had a seawall especially when the weather is bad and the waves come all the way over the road,” he said.

Mr. Mika said there was a possibility the waves coming onto the shores could damage vehicles or lead to car accidents.

He added bad weather causes waves to reach their homes, especially his own family’s home because their house was in front of the road.

But that is not the only danger from water.

Mr. Mika said that in Solosolo they also  live close to a river bank so when there’s bad weather, the water usually reaches their house.

“There has been damage because of climate change. The riverbank behind my house sometimes overflows and it comes into my home.”

He said climate change was something that we should all be worried about because it would cost us if we fail to take care of our environment.
