A mother and her five-year-old child died at the scene at Iva Savai’i on Wednesday night when a flat deck truck collided with a van.

The deaths were confirmed by a senior Police officer at Tuasivi who did not want to be identified.

“At the moment we are still investigating the matter and the cause of the collision between the two vehicles,” said the source.

“But what we can confirm is that two lives have been lost as a result of this incident.

“The deceased include a mother and her five year old child from Faga and Iva, Savai’i.”

The deceased were in the ban.

“The collision happened at around 8:20pm on Wednesday,” he said.

“We have not been able to confirm whether the driver of the truck was under the influence of alcohol.

“We will report the incident to the Apia headquarter once we have all the information.”

The source went on to say that the incident was just sad.

“What a sad start for the celebration of Independence Day,” he said.

“We would like to send our condolences to all family members of the two lives that were lost in this incident.”

The officer also urged everyone to stay safe as the country continues the extra long weekend.
