Shriners continue to help Samoa
The Shriners Children’s Hospital is no stranger to Samoa.
For the past 20 years, they have been sending Orthopedic teams to Samoa.
This year they have made a commitment to engage in skills transfer here in Samoa.
They joined the Faculty of Medicine, National University of Samoa on Tuesday to spend the morning with the clinical students of F.O.M teaching in musculoskeletal physical examination and then lecturing on common pediatric orthopedic conditions they have seen in their travels to Samoa.
Representing Shriners this year were Specialist Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Paul Moroz, Resident pediatric orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Chris Belyea and their nurse. Mary.
F.O.M hopes to develop this new relationship with Shriners in future visits to integrate the local clinical medical students into their programme to learn one-on-one about pediatric orthopedic conditions seen here and what they can do to help prevent these from developing.
On Wednesday, the Shriners team were able to present to the doctors at N.H.S on Orthoaedic trauma and how this is a public health problem sharing evidence from an International Population health study in orthopedic trauma the Shriners team are involved in.
F.O.M looks forward to working with Shriners in future visits to help build clinical capacity within the M.B.B.S curriculum.
