Learning can be fun and doesn’t necessarily have to happen only in a classroom.

For St. Mary’s Primary School, they held their annual English Day yesterday, which is always held before exams.

It’s a day where students from Years 1-8 perform dances, songs, poems and drama for their chosen topics based on the theme “Education opens doors to success”.

The event helps with the preparation process for the exam. It is also mainly a fun day to enjoy and connect the students.

“We want to teach them that there is another way of learning,” school Principal Sr. Masela Tenisio said.

“Every item they perform is related to the topic. This year we tried to put in a variety of drama, poem and contemporary dance, so I think by doing so they learn that they can use other activities to learn, it is not just speaking and writing.

“English is the second language and it is very important and we want them to speak and teach them to be confident in using it.

“The students always enjoy this day and we find it a very helpful event.”

Developing confidence in public speaking is also another way this event helps the children.

“They got a lot of confidence from performing in front of the parents, friends, other students and family members. We invite the parents to come and see what their children are doing,” Sr. Masela said.

“Every year many people attend English Day. It is good to see that parents support their children and it gives us confidence. It gives credit to the teachers for the hard work.

“We do evaluation at the end of the year where the principals come together to see what we have done at these kinds of events.

“They are learning to do speeches especially in Year 8, they write them themselves, which later gets edited by the teachers. This is a very important skill for their future,” she told the Samoa Observer.

Teachers also benefit from the event.

“The kids they learn a lot and even the teachers they put a lot of work into it. At the end of the day, all of us benefit from that. It is one of the events that we would not like to miss.

“They have done so well, I am very happy for today,” Sr. Masela said.
