Samoa Golf Incorporated (S.G.I.) donated US$2,500 (T$6,324) to the Samoan Junior Golfers for international competition yesterday at Fepulea’i Law Firm, Malifa.

Through this donation, five young golfers will fly to Santiago, America, to take part in the International Management Group (I.M.G.) Junior Worlds, representing Samoa for the first time.

The five are Leo Garry Lio Vui, Gregory Atapana, Kilo Brown, Aaron Evalu and Faith Vui, who is the only female participant.

S.G.I. President, Leiataua Isiluki Punivalu said the assistance is to support golf.

“We want to make sure that the sport has a future for our country and it is an Olympic and Commonwealth sport and we are very happy to support any of the kids who will be pursuing this particular sport.

“We are trying for our students who play to also do well in school and not have any interference with the studies,” he said.

The donation will be used for flights, accommodation and other needs during the tournament.

“The reason we are doing this is to be better professional golf players, but it’s more like for us to learn and have better experience to help develop this particular sport. It’s is very good to learn more and have more experience with what we want to do in life, it’s good for us to get sponsors and we’re really glad we have sponsors,” Leo, who is the eldest of the lot said.

“I started playing four years ago and so had experience playing international tournaments before, but we represented American Samoa but now it is the time to represent our country. What we do is throughout the years they have a march and we march down and we hold our flag.

“I want to thank all our sponsors and everyone who have supported us throughout everything.”
