Rain brings family a nightmare

Malaeliua Manesesa is seeking assistance for her family home.

While homes are meant to be safe and secure, for Manesesa its insecurities continue to be a major worry.

She spoke to the Village Voice team of her need to get her house repaired in order to provide a safe and secure home to raise her kids.

Living in a small shack with her husband and three kids, it becomes a nightmare when it rains.

“When it rains, the roof leaks and my husband and I try and block the leak, but it is to no success, there are so many leaks. The water that leaks into the house will wet the floor and it is hard to have a dry and safe spot for my kids to rest,” she said.

“The house was built with all that we could acquire, so this is all that we are able to salvage in order to make a small home just for our little family. My husband works so we all depend on him but because his income is not enough for us to rebuild our house, we use it for daily and weekly expenses like food.”

It is tough for the couple to live life by the day and to assure their children that all will be okay.

“Every time I look at my children, it always breaks my heart that I cannot give them a proper home where they can safely stay in when it is not cold at night, and to protect them and ensure their safety. It is true we need the rain for our supply of water but my greatest fear is my kids getting sick because they are exposed to leaking roofs,” she added.

The mother of three from Malie-uta said they also need access to their own water supply, which is currently beyond their means.

“We all use one water source and that is from our neighbour, but when the water goes off, we usually wait for a week to have a supply of water. But because we do not have our own water source and no toilet, we all use our neighbour’s toilet daily. I know that we have so many problems but for me, I am concerned for the sake of my children.”
