Mother tells of life without electricity

Nefu is not afraid to admit her family is struggling.

Living without electricity, water and hardly any money, she said her family needs help.

“My husband and I are trying to start over in life,” he said.

“We’ve been through a lot of problems moving around to look for some place to stay. We’ve ended up staying here at my husband’s uncle’s land.”

The parents of one say without formal jobs, life is extremely tough.

“My daughter is 10 years old, and I’m a stay home mommy, while my husband works at our plantation for living.”

In order to get water they fetch some from the neighbours.

“Lucky we have a helping hand around here who offers water for our family… at least we have some water.

“Right now we can’t afford water, and we’re struggling to feed our daughter.

“I’m not worried about myself. She is our priority. I really need help financially to get going.”

Their house is not much.

It’s just some sticks nailed together and thatched roof.

“This is all we can afford.”

Aside from their daughter’s education expenses, Nefu said they also have other obligations – including church, family and village contributions.

“Sometimes we just have tea and banana for dinner.

“I’m not complaining but that’s our reality. God knows we believe in him.”

The mother went on to say her biggest goal is keep trying.

“I have no job, no money, no career but I love my family.

“All I need to do is stay positive, try to help my husband in any way I can and make sure our daughter is in good hands.”

The family has no phone but the Village Voice team can lead you to their home if you are willingly to help. Contact the Samoa Observer on 23078.
