A good man loves his family. And his family should be his most valued possession. That also means they become his priority.

Tolu Tolu, a 27-year-old-father of three believes this is what makes a real good man.

He is a farmer and he does his best for his family.

“I understand that this life is very difficult and for many of us, bringing up a family in this time and age has immense pressures,” he told the Village Voice.

“What’s even more challenging is because everything in today’s world even in Samoa is about money.”

Tolu might not have a lot of that but he makes the most of what he can earn.

“My family keeps me going daily despite the very many difficulties associated with living in Samoa today because of the high cost of living.”

“My family would starve to death if I just sit around and do nothing.”

He admitted to the Village Voice that before having a family, he looked at the world in a different way.

“In those days you do whatever you like to do but that changed when I had a child.”

“Nowadays I’m more concerned about how you’re going to feed your family from day to day.”

Tolu said his nightmare is when he will not be able to provide for his wife and children.

“I pray that day doesn’t come,” he said.

“It’s hard, but that’s how life is these days. If we don’t sweat, you’ll die and your whole family will die with you.”

Although raising a family is tough, Tolu said it is worthwhile.

“To be honest, nothing has brought me more peace in life than simply being a good husband and father to my children and my wife,” he told the Village Voice.

“There are so many problems because we’ve somehow believed that material and worldly things satisfy us. But they just come and go.”

“But a family is forever for they are part of God’s creation, He created family from Adam and Eve and we all know that.”

As father, and head of his family, he leaves all his troubles to God.

“My family is everything to me. Just as I saw when my father grew up. So being a good father, it all started from home, and that’s the same way I want my children and their children to grow up in.”

Tolu said that he enjoys nothing more than spending time with his children.

“Personally we (fathers) have to learn to enjoy precious moments with them. Make every minute count.”

“I do believe that God blessed me in life with a wonderful family, and a loving wife, and I remain thankful for that blessing.”

“That keeps me going everyday, no matter the rain and the sun.”

Despite the struggles, his faith in God is what gives him strength to continue loving and providing for his family.

“But a family that has peace of God, whatever circumstances that come your way, there’s still that inner peace that He guides us through.”
