Students of Tuana’i Primary School celebrated the opening of their new school building yesterday, thanks to the generosity of the government of Japan.

Costing $278,280, the project was funded as part of Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (G.G.P.).

The work includes the reconstruction of the main school building to house eight new classrooms, a hall, a staffroom and a library.

Prime Minister Tuilaepa Dr. Sailele Malielegaoi was present at the opening. He was accompanied by the Minister of Education, Sports and Culture, Loau Keneti Sio, and other senior government officials.

“The official opening of this school building for the children of Tuana’i is a development and a success; all because of our good partnership with the government of Japan,” said the Prime Minister.

“Programmes regarding our education system are something that our government, as well as its’ ministries, are always working on for the betterment of all our students.”

The Prime Minister also added that: “The number of students in this school (Tuana’i Primary School) should be increasing soon to make use of all the hard work of everyone that were involved in this project, because within these buildings, is the very place to seek more knowledge.

“Also, to the principal and staff members: a new environment is great for you because it is good to feel a change to help with new ways and ideas to teach children in these classrooms.

“If you work with honesty, all these students work will be a success as well.”

On behalf of the government of Samoa, Prime Minister Tuilaepa Dr. Sailele Malielegaoi acknowledged the government of Japan and everyone else involved in making this project a success.

Japan’s Ambassador to Samoa, Maugaoleatuolo Shinya Aoki, handed over the project to the delight of the principal and students.

According to a press statement from the Japanese Embassy in Samoa, School President, Logo Futialo Fa’aui, and members of the Tuana’i Primary School Committee sought help from Japan in 2015. The request was answered and in March 2017, the contract was signed.

“The government of Japan, through its G.G.P. programme, is pleased and committed to be part of the development process to assisting Samoa through supporting community projects, not only at a grassroots level, but also at the national level,” the statement reads.

“Japan’s G.G.P. development assistance has been ongoing for 26 years and focuses on small scale projects that directly benefit the grassroots level as well as contributing to the socio-economic development of Samoa.

“It is recorded that over 90 similar projects of reconstruction and expansion of school buildings have been successful implemented in the field of education.”
