Record set at schools comp

The President of the Samoa Weightlifting Federation, Tuaopepe Asiata Wallwork, is impressed by what he saw at the inaugural Secondary Schools Weightlifting competition.

“Our whole team at Samoa Weightlifting was surprised to see the talent the students have for the sport,” he said.

The competition was divided among four sessions, with two sessions of boys, as well as for girls, with different weight divisions.

The women’s lightweight was divided into four weight divisions. 

Sekolasitika Isaia of Channel College topped the 58kg division, with a snatch of 61kg, Clean & Jerk of 81kg with a total of 142kg. 

The 63kg division was topped by Jim Saofaialo of S.O.H. with a snatch of 70kg and 90kg of Clean & Jerk. 

The 69kg division was topped by Vitolina Leleisiuao of Wesley College with a 37kg snatch and 47kg Clean & Jerk, for a total of 82kg. The last division was of the 75kg, where Loto Pereira of Faleata College won with a 65kg snatch and 85kg Clean & Jerk.

The women’s heavyweight session was divided into two weight division of 90kg and 90+ kg. 

Lesila Fiapule of Avele College topped the 90kg division with a snatch lift of 80kg and Clean & Jerk of 98kg, with a total lift of 178kgs. 

The 90+kg division was won by Moala Bobsoau of Leififi College who snatched 55kg with a Clean & Jerk of 70kg for a total of 125kg.

The boys first session of lightweight boys was divided into four weight classes. 

The 56kg weight division was topped by Johnny Tuffy of Maluafou College scoring 50kg of snatch and Clean & Jerk 70kg, for a total of 120kg. 

The 62kg division was topped by Geoffrey Johny of Leifiifi College with a 65kg snatch and Clean & Jerk of 91kg, for total of 156kgs.

Pelesasa Viavia of Faleata College won the 69kg division with a 63kg snatch and Clean & Jerk of 90kg for 153kg total. 

The 77kg division was also won by a Faleata College representative, snatching 80kg with Clean & Jerk of 105kg for a total of 185kg.

The men’s heavyweight division was an exciting battle with an outstanding performance from one Avele College student, Don Opeloge, breaking the Oceania School boys record and Commonwealth school boys record. 

Opeloge snatched 147kg with a Clean & Jerk of 185kg, for a total of 327kgs.

Tuaopepe said the competition has given him a lot of confidence about the future of the sport.

“Our association couldn’t be happier seeing the students getting the fun out of this sport after yesterday’s competition, and also the record recorded. last night, by Don Opeloge,” he said.

 “I have seen the success from yesterday and I’m pretty sure our team and officials would like to continue this exposure within the schools, and we will try to have more than just one tournament a year.”

The medal presentation was postponed from last night until the fifteenth of this month, together with the Boxing competition, with the Minister of Education Sports and Culture to award the medals to all the winners.
