Two become one

Think a minute…An African man who had three wives asked the following question of his Irish friend who had just one wife: “Do you like your wife?” His Irish friend replied: “I like her very much!”  The African man shook his head and said sadly:  “I don’t like any of mine.”  A famous comedian gives this advice to young couples before they get married: “Of course it’s important to love each other, but if you want to be truly happy together, you’d better like each other!”

Ray Rosa grew up in Italy and came to America as a young man in 1921. There he met and married his wife Isabel. They settled in a small town where Ray worked as a barber most of his life. Some years ago Isabel became seriously ill and had to live in a nursing home in a nearby town. Ray’s life and daily routine completely changed. Every morning, seven days a week, he took a bus to the nursing home where Isabel waited for him in her wheelchair.

They spent every day together as Ray took care of her. Sometimes he brought his guitar and sang Italian songs for the other sick patients, and gave free haircuts to some of the men. Then at 5:30 every evening, Ray said goodbye to his wife and rode the bus home. Ray had “become one with his wife” so his life was wherever she was.

That’s “the good life” of real love, giving, satisfaction and security. It does not get any better than that. You cannot fill your heart with satisfying, lasting happiness until you give it away to someone else. Jesus teaches that our life is much more blessed and happy when we give more than we receive. In fact, marriage is all about giving and forgiving. It is living every day with your best friend for life, so your two lives become one.

Marriage is a choice and commitment you make not just for a few years, but for the rest of your life—no matter what happens. You choose to do all you can for your mate’s well being and happiness—because you know that is the only way you will ultimately be happy yourself. Won’t you ask Jesus to forgive you for living for yourself? Then ask Him to start changing your heart, so you can start enjoying real love for a lifetime. “Two is better than one” if you truly become one. Just think a minute…
