A new era for the Apia Rugby Union started yesterday.

The Taula Apia Rugby Union welcomed three teams from the Apia West Rugby Union to join their competition.

The teams are Marist St. Joseph’s Club, Vaimoso and Moamoa.

The games yesterday were closely followed by the Manu Samoa head Coach, Fuimaono Titimaea Tafua, who expressed delight at the decision.

He believes that this is the start of new good things for Samoa Rugby.

“Welcoming the Marist Club, Vaimoso Rugby Club and Moamoa Rugby Club to our Taula Apia Rugby Union is a successful move given what we have experienced today,” he said, noting the quality of competition.”

“The real meaning behind this merge is for the growth of rugby in Samoa, so that we can have a successful competition and in return develop the sport.”

Fuimaono added that having these teams means the quality of the competition will improve, giving local players the best chance of developing their games.

“It’s going to be a tough and even more competitive now with these teams joining the Taula Apia Rugby Union.”

Which was exactly the case yesterday.

Marist’s first game was against S.C.O.P.A, which they won 27-26. S.C.O.P.A. had a chance to win the game but they couldn’t land the conversion in the last minute.

Moamoa Rugby Club went down in a close match against Magiagi’s Lupe ole Soaga Rugby Club, 15-10.

Vaimoso lost to Apia Maroons, 26-21.
