The Iva White Lions handed Frankie Tama Uli their first loss of the season in the final of round two of the Frankie Savaii 7s on Saturday at Don Bosco Field, Salelologa.

Reigning national champions Tama Uli won the Cup final over Iva in Leg 1 last week, 28-0, and those two clubs met in the Cup final again in Leg 2.

Iva ensured they wouldn’t be held scoreless again when Palepoi Tafa scored the first try.

Playmaker Paulo Toilolo then replied for Tama Uli, but Iva’s Frank Tato scored at the end of the first half to take a 12-7 lead.

Tama Uli scored first in the second half through Uaina Sione to even things at 12-all.

Palepoi Tafa then got his second for Iva White Lions after a great run from forward and captain Meki Magele.

Their 19-12 lead lasted right up until the final moments of normal time when Tama Uli’s Tipa Sapeti levelled the scores.

Magele scored at the end of extra time to win the Cup for his side.

“We are thankful our hardwork pays off,” he said.

“Playing Frankie Tama Uli is always a tough ask but credit my boys for stepping up when it matters.”

Magele said the team wanted payback after last week’s big loss.

Tama Uli captain Vaovasa Afa said they knew Iva would throw everything at them.

“Credit to Iva White Lions for improving its performance this week.

“We failed to capitalise on our opportunities and cost us the game.”

He said the tournament would be huge in their preparation for the Marist Samoa International 7s.

The president of the tournament organisers Fa’asaleleaga Rugby Union, Seumanu Douglas Ngau Chun was pleased to see Iva White Lions win because it shows the depth in quality of the Savaii teams.

“It’s great when we have finals like we witnessed today.

“The two best teams in Savaii playing and showing us the skill levels they have and I am confident we are building our teams well for next major international tournaments.”

The next Frankie Savaii 7’s Leg will be next Saturday, 2nd February 2019 at Don Bosco Field, Salelologa.
