Fine young Ambassadors for Samoa

Dear Editor,

We had the pleasure of hosting the Samoa under 20 National Rugby Team. We worshipped together and shared communion - it was an honour to see and meet these fine young ambassadors who are the designated flag bearers of our tiny nation at the World Cup to be held in Zimbabwe.

We had many overseas based players and many who have “mixed parentage” which made for interesting and sometimes humorous introductions.

As noted by Faanana Jerome Grey “We are Samoa” and we stand beside our children and our little parish derived so much nationalist pride in seeing these young men and their passion and fervour for Samoa.

A big faafetai lava to Ramsey Tomokino, Faaofo Junior Leota and Potu Leavasa (Team Management) who liaised well with the congregation and acted as translators for the young men.

My big hope is that our national under 20 does not become a feeder team to New Zealand’s already saturated production line of Poly power rugby talent.

We hope that these young men see a pathway forward and stay to represent Samoa in the future. We surely need their skills and their fortitude.

Safe travels to Africa team - it will not be easy and your resolve will be tested. We pray (as all of Samoa will) that the Lord protect you all and keep you and that his countenance shine upon you all. May the Holy Spirit guide you and lead you through the difficult times.

Boys always carry yourselves with aplomb and pride and know that there is a small island nation in the Pacific cheering your every move.

Ia manuia lau tapuaiga Samoa.
