Nine of 15 Directors who successfully completed the professional programme for Directors’ course were awarded certificates of competence in directorship yesterday.

Held at the Tanoa Tusitala Hotel, the five-day course was organised by the Samoa Institute of Directors and ran from July 30-August 3, 2018.

Chief Executive Officer for Samoa Institute of Directors, Funemalafai Onosefulu Fuatai said the project focused on upskilling directors and how they can better perform their tasks and responsibilities.

“Part of the training familiarises the directors from the private sector on the Government framework and how it works,” Funemalafai said.

“You can be a doctor, a lawyer but you need to be trained to understand the work of the Government because for some they might have not worked in a Government department before.

“The course gives them an understanding of what they should know like company finances, legislations and basically understanding its application.”

Chairman of the Board of the Institute of Director, Muaausa Joseph Walter said the programme is recognised by the Samoa Qualifications Authority and comprehensively covers the basic skill and competences required for dynamic directors.

Funemalafai said six of the directors who completed the training couldn’t make it to receive their certificates because of work commitments.

The training focused on the role and responsibility of directors, legal requirements and obligations of boards and directors, company structures, board appointed committees, financial operations, understanding strategic planning, board and C.E.O. relationship and company analytics.

The 15 awardees are: Shorley Mariner, Gabrielle Apelu, Taito John Roache, Amiatu Cathy Faolotoi, Ulu Vaomalo Ulu Kini, Tamaseu Leni Warren, Fiu Peni Asi, Fu’a Meki Hazelman, Seulupe Michelle Macdonald, Tufuga Gafoa Faitua, Toala Risale Risale, Laufaleaina Lesa, Reverend Afereti Uili, Tuilaepa Eti Faolotoi and Matautia Rula Levi.
