Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi, is staying quiet on the success of Miss World Samoa, Latafale Auva’a.

“I don’t have any comments to say about that,” Tuilaepa responded yesterday, when he was asked about Ms. Auva’a and her performance so far in the Pageant.

“The only thing I talked about was here in the (Miss) Pacific (pageant). There is a commitment in that and that is what I had talked about…if you are committed here (in the Pacific) you need to honour your commitment.”

Tuilaepa added the Miss Pacific Islands pageant was for the benefit of the Pacific islands. 

On Thursday last week, Ms. Auva’a made the final of the Miss World Sports Challenge events in Sanya, China, and came fifth. 

Her performance gained her valuable points for the Miss World leaderboard, which will determine the overall winner. She’s been placed in the top ten for the traditional wear category and talent.

Prior to her decision to leave for the world stage pageant, Tuilaepa blasted Ms. Auva’a for choosing the Miss World Pageant over the regional Miss Pacific Islands.

“The only pageant that our Miss was supposed to contest in is the Pacific Islands one,” Tuilaepa said.  

“But to go on the world stage is a waste of time (na’o pa’upa’u mea maua ai).”

According to the Prime Minister, the Miss Pacific Islands should get her priorities right.

“The Miss Pacific is to promote Samoa and the other Pacific islands,” he said.

“But to jump up onto the world stage is just wanting too much…it is common practice for us to leave what we are capable of and to reach for something that we are nowhere near accomplishing. All you get is embarrassment.”
