Leading by example

A 38-year old father Ioane Tolu from Ti’avea says that exercise at home by doing chores really helps.

Village Voice caught up with Ioane when he was on his way home from his plantation.

“To be honest, this is my life every day, and leading by example is very important to everyone not only for my family but for my children.” he said.

“Ever since I was young, this is what I have done every day, everywhere as I helped my parents with lots of chores.

“That’s the life I was brought up with, we exercised by doing a lots of chores and helping out our parents.

“Now I’m a grown man, I want to pass this down to my children to work as hard as they can for them to survive.

He said leading by example for his children is very important.

“I am one of the untitled men in the village, we are called warriors who are responsible for all the hard work in our families especially by looking after our children.

“Yes, we all know that the father is the head of the family, personally all the work that we do is all about  doing it from the heart knowing that my children are watching at the same time.

“That’s the only thing that we can do to plant love in the hearts of our children through the love that we show.

“Not only that, we are also responsible for serving food for our family, I started this from my home when I was young”

“Now I am a father, this role of taule’ale’a still continues until I become a matai in my family.

“That’s how things go in Samoa, as we’ve always heard that the way through authority is through being a servant and that is true.

He believes that working hard in anything is associated with healthy living.

“Sometimes you don’t have to look for a gym to get fit, but all you have to do is do as many chores as you can.

“Because if  a mother and a father are healthy, they will live in harmony as well.

“We need to work on this every day, not just one day and then finish,  but to work hard.”
