Making do with what we have

Caroline Si’itagata, from the villages of Lotofaga and Salani knows life is not straightforward

Aged 24, Caroline and her husband are taking care of her mother along with their own family.

“The situation for us living out here is not easy,” she admits to the Village Voice.

“We don’t have a water supply or an electricity supply yet, because we just moved here few months ago.

“But I am just glad that I have the opportunity to provide for my family. We may not have money at times but we can still survive every day.

“Even though you need money for pretty much everything in life, we can still make do

“My husband is employed. It’s the type of work that provides money on a day to day basis. We only rarely have people ask my husband to come and work for them so we can earn a bit of money.

Although they have little, Caroline is grateful.

“As you can see the kind of house we have is basic but being without water and electricity is worse; we’re poor. But we thank the Lord everyday for the strength he has given my mother,” she said.

“Even if we don’t have anything nice to eat, we are grateful to have something even if it’s just taro and tea. That’s how things are for my family.”

There is no doubt that her husband is a hardworking man.

“The work he does is labouring,” she said.

“He works with chainsaws, lawn mowers and so on. The money doesn’t just flow in but we consider ourselves lucky if my husband is asked to come and work on someone’s land.

She believes changes and challenges are part of life but we must try our best to overcome them.

At the moment, Caroline’s focus is on developing her young family.

“I work to provide for my family,” she said.

“As a young mother of one child, I know very well what I should be working harder to help my family.

“Hopefully one day I’ll get a job so that I can give my family the best life.

Caroline can be contacted through 7758373 if you are willing to help her family in any way you can.
