No place I’d rather be than with family

Titi Matagi is a 23-year-old from Falevao and Aele.

He’s the third child of seven children and speaking to the Village Voice, Titi said he’s working on being a better youth.

He wants to use all his time to serve his family.

“A lot of the youth nowadays don’t want to listen to their parents,” he tells the Village Voice team.

“It’s no wonder why some parents have given up on them and I don’t blame them, I mean if I were in their position, I would feel tired of giving advice over and over again and no one seems to be interested in taking it or willing to change.

“Honestly, I used to work for a year and a half; from 2016 to the middle of this year but I think I stopped working because I didn’t like the environment that I was at as well as the workers.

“And when I had that experience, the only thing that came to mind was that only your family has your back.

“That’s why right now, I prefer to look after and take care of my family.

“Whether it’s picking up coconuts and planting crops in the plantation to help them out, I take on anything as long as I get to be with my family.

“None of us are employed except for my father who is currently working in American Samoa and although it’s hard for him to be away, he has to because of his love for us.

“My other siblings and I are all here for our mother, giving her a helping hand in managing things at home.”

Titi has fears about the youth today.

“With the fast paced changes that youth or the new generations are facing, it’s best to not get yourself mixed up with the wrong crowd because a lot of bad things have happened from that kind of situation.

“You know, too many young people make poor choices and ruin their future because of alcohol and drug use.

“But you know the funny thing is, whenever something like that happens, the first people who are there for you is your family.

“So that’s why I want to serve my family and to be someone better for them, because no matter what happens; they will never abandon you.”
